WKNDX: Guido de Pooter

Rearranging objects, photos, drawings, prints and ready-mades in order to question the status of that what surrounds us

Guido de Pooter constructs, assembles and rearranges objects, photos, drawings, prints and ready-mades in order to question the status of that which surrounds us. Reconstruction is important to him. An object can tell us something about the past but also about how we use our past. He believes that the past is in progress.

Scavenger
An appropriation of the story by the philosopher Plutarch about an ancient Greek hero Theseus.

Theseus had a ship. As captain he wanted to keep his ship in good condition. The moment some part of the ship started to wear out, even if it was still pretty good, the ship’s carpenter would replace it, using wood from the lands they visited.

Unknown to Theseus and his crew, a scavenger crew had been following Theseus’ ship the whole time. Every time that Theseus’ crew threw a part of the original ship overboard, the scavengers collected it. As time went on they built a complete ship using Theseus’ original ship. When Theseus returned home and docked, the scavengers docked their ship right next to Theseus’. Their ship was composed of precisely the parts that composed the ship Theseus started out in, assembled in exactly the same way.
